Senior Scientist, AK Weigand, TU Dresden

Dr Marco Wenzel graduated in 2003 in Chemical Engineering and moved on to do a PhD in Chemistry at the TU Dresden under the supervision of Prof Karsten Gloe with focus on Coordination Chemistry, Metal Ion Extraction and Anion Binding. During his PhD he joined research groups in the UK, Japan and Australia, followed by postdoctoral research stays in New Zealand and the UK with Prof Paul Plieger and Prof Philip A. Gale. Since 2014 he works as Senior Scientist with Prof Jan J. Weigand at the Chair for Inorganic Molecular Chemistry, at TU Dresden, Germany. Marco’s research activities are focused on the design and synthesis of new receptors for the coordination of cations, anion and defined metal salts. These materials are used in the formation of Supramolecules and in the selective binding and separation of single species. He uses the systems to develop strategies for recovering valuable materials from waste streams. His work also includes the development of hybrid separation processes such as in-situ electrochemical manipulation and metal extraction for the separation of complex metal ion mixtures obtained from secondary sources.
